Combing Products Creates New Services

A big part of what I love about my job, is the opportunity to work with my clients and help develop Services which, will either fill a void in their already existing venue or create a whole new Service.
In working with one of my clients this past week, we needed to combine their Spa Pedicure with an upgrade to the Anti Age Leg Treatment and Golden Girl Mask. The catch is, we wanted to offer this service to be timed at 75 minutes.

After a bit of pondering the light bulb went off and I was able to produce what my client needed. We performed this amazing,luxurious Foot Care service well within the required time. No cutting corners!

The Pedicure was luxurious.  Even for me as the Foot Care provider.  It was simple and the client could see and feel the difference through every aspect of the service.  It was very, very exciting.

There are many names to call this service

  • Spa Pedicure with an extreme makeover
  • Golden Girl luxurious Pedi
  • Heel and Glow Pedi
  • Pamper and Pimp with Results

Well, you get my drift.  Call it what you want but it's not just about the name, it's about the results.  It's about making your client feel beautiful.  It's about making your client feel important.  It's about offering an upgrade service which, your clients will not be able to get around the corner.  It's about RESULTS WITH LUXURY!

Items needed

75 Minute Spa Pedicure with upgrade(s)

  • Wipe feet with Kodan wipes - entire foot plus toe flossing
  • Run water add 1 capful Foot bath crystals plus 1-2 drops Anti Age hand and nail bath
  • Remove nail polish if applicable
  • Client consultation visual and personal
  • Place both feet in water
  • Remove 1st foot after 3 minutes
  • Wrap foot with dry towel leaving toenails exposed
  • Apply cuticle cream to cuticle
  • Clip, file and buff nails
  • Process cuticle work
  • Place foot back in water
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot
  • Remove 1st foot, wrap loosely with towel - do not dry
  • Mix AntiAge hand and nail bath to a frothy consistency
  • Apply luxuriously with round brush to entire leg
  • Unwrap towel and apply AntiAge peeling scrub to leg and foot-massage
  • Place foot back in water - splash/wipe off scrub
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot
  • Remove 1st foot, dry completely
  • Apply Callous soak spray - loosely wrap foot
  • Apply AntiAge lifting concentrate with brush to leg
  • Use Wrinkle remover expert
  • Use Angel Feet file for callous debribment on foot
  • Wipe of excess
  • Apply AntiAge mask on entire leg and bottom only of foot
  • Wrap loosely with heated towel
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot
  • DO NOT WIPE OFF MASK
  • Wrap foot with dry towel, leaving toenails exposed
  • Apply Golden Girl to leg
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot
  • Clean toenails on both feet to prepare for polish
  • Apply base coat
  • Apply polish
  • Apply top coat
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot
  • Remove Golden Girl
  • Using AntiAge cream or Urea 10% foot cream perform massage
  • Repeat above on 2nd foot

It's writings like this that make me want to get back behind the chair.  How super exciting to have these kinds of quality products to be able to offer such quality services.  Services which provide amazing results with a pampering and elegant feel.

I encourage you to "think outside the box".  Combine your products with the idea of being able to offer your clients the results they didn't know they needed and help them destress from their everyday life.  Take them to a world they will talk about and feel for days.

Professionalism is a Learned process

I remember when Facebook first came out. It was right around the My Space time when My Space wasn't doing so well. At it's first conception, FB was a primary gateway to reunite with friends and family. A way for everyone to stay in touch, reconnect and keep up with what everyone was doing. We saw and still see Marriages, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Babies, What we eat, Where we travel, Who's dating who and much much more.  I also remember thinking what a valuable tool FB would be for our Business world and our Law Enforcement world. Then it happened. FB turned into and turned on a whole bunch of what is now known as Social Media which is being used for all the above and then some.

I believed in FB so much I bought stock.  I still remember sitting around socializing with a group of people who were calling anyone who invested in FB "stupid".  Kept my mouth shut of course, but I certainly wasn't stupid.  FB was good to me for a long time.  However, not to long ago I decided to sell my stock and this is the reason why.  Which leads me to.......

 

PROFESSIONALISM IS A LEARNED PROCESS

 

Anymore when I'm on FB, i'm discouraged by so many things.  Instead of people sharing their lives, their sharing their dirty laundry.  There isn't a whole lot of "Sally just had a baby" or  "look....i'm in Africa".  Instead there is a whole lot of negativity, nastiness and unprofessionalism.

 

What is "unprofessionalism" on FB?

  • Unprofessionalism is simply NOT choosing your words carefully
  • Unprofessionalism is hiding behind the computer
  • Unprofessionalism is making innuendos that are obvious digs
  • Unprofessionalism is jacking in on someone else promotion
  • Unprofessionalism is mentioning anyones name, Business or not, in a negative connotation
  • Unprofessionalism is immoral, dishonest or dishonorable conduct.

What IS Professionalism?

 

An individual who shows consideration and respect for others demonstrates a commitment to professionalism. Likewise, a person who keeps his or her word, demonstrates loyalty, and exceeds expectations is demonstrating professionalism.

 

Read those words:  "shows consideration and respect".

I've seen enough on FB recently which has brought a whole new light into my world of Beauty.  And unfortunately, it's not a shining light.  I've seen words and comments which could hurt other peoples Business and i've seen words or comments which in the end......will hurt the people who are posting.

Centre for Beauty has opened a FEET Geeks CFB page that is NOT opened to everyone, you have to be approved.  It's about Education.  It's about helping each other.  I intend to keep it that way.  I also intend to minimize my Business interaction on FB because I simply choose NOT to be a part of what I am seeing.  I'll be moving over to Instagram to share the wonderful things about Centre for Beauty and the brands I carry.  And, i'll be searching new ways to keep my clients informed.

I encourage everyone to take that 10 second pause before posting your message on FB.  Burning bridges is not the key to success, negativity only breeds negativity and when you hang out your dirty laundry, it never goes away.

Variety is the Spice of Life!

As I travel around and visit the Salons of my clients, i'm often
reminded of my days owning a Full Service Salon.
It was exhausting. LOL!
However, we did some things that were so much fun and extremely creative.
Every Holiday was an event. It didn't matter if it was Happy New Year, Happy Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas and many many more. We made the Holiday fun and we adjusted our services accordingly.

It was always a struggle to keep with what you believe but add an element of change.  For instance, in regards to Foot Care when I was introduced to the Footlogix products, I learned the importance of the "results oriented" Pedicure.  I learned it wasn't all about the Fluff -n-Buff and I learned the importance of the Consultation.  Making sure you know who your Client is, what medical challenges they may be experiencing and the harm we can do if we aren't Educating ourselves and our clients.  I learned the importance of the 3 "R's".

Recognize, Recommend, Refer

My biggest challenge with Footlogix, albeit a great product was, it's so clinical.  I had a hard time adding any "ambience" to my Pedicures without compromising the integrity of what the brands tag line is.  "Where Medi meets Pedi".  And, I soon found out once I became a Distributor of the brand.....many of my clients did as well.  Therefore, it stands as a separate offering on a Salon menu which, is mostly the path NOT chosen.

Why?  Because our Salon clients although they like consistency, they also like to be excited.

Then comes LCN

LCN or "Wilde Cosmetics" is the Diamond in the rough of our Foot Care business.  In fact, our entire Beauty business.  Being introduced to this amazing brand has done more for my career as a Nail Technician then anything else.  They are constantly evolving and bringing European quality to our American market.  Which is how I have learned, it is possible to have results with luxury and give our Clients a combination of instant satisfaction, long term benefits AND yes....even a bit of fluff-n-buff.

These are just some of the reviews from our flagship Missing Pieces class.
There is nothing more rewarding to know what kind of an impact you have been able to make in someones life and their career. Credit does not all go to me. I had an amazing team who were all a critical part of our success.
Missing Pieces

To say that we had an amazing group of attendees would be an understatement. They came from all walks of life, varied in ages, different parts of the Country and held different positions from Owners, Independent Contractors and Employees.

However, they all had one(1) thing in common.  They came to learn and do what they needed to do to better themselves AND their Business.

Emily Nelson was our Instructor for retail.  We discovered what our team knew.  The biggest challenge of selling retail is "fear".  We talked through it and walked through exercises which helped with confidence building in each attendee.  In the end, they all sold a retail product to each of their guest...with confidence.

Our referral session taught by Donna Muyzinski was definitely to short.  We had a very emotional segment on qualifying who we are.  The results were mind blowing and a definite confident builder.  We finished with our referral letters which will be in the mail this week.

Massaging with Nellie Neal was a sure treat.  Contraindications, money making ideas and new Techniques is what our attendees took home with them.  Needless to say, they learned and what they learned was effective.

Pedicuring with CJ was different than any other class.  Non product specific, this segment offered a clear and concise explanation of the difference between a Medi Pedi and a Luxurious "experience" Pedicure.  The results in our demonstration using LCN Urea (luxurious/experience) and Footlogix  (more clinical) was an awakening.  We all discovered how the added ingredients in LCN can make a more hydrated and smooth as silk feel......as seen here after three (3) days.

Caring for our guest and putting our teaching into action.  This says it all.  Great learning, Great experience, Great times!

And....we had some fun.  We got Nellie and Emily lounging on the day before the class, enjoying some Florida sun and Maddie our dog just giving some love.  We had cocktails at the Tiki Hut while discussing our new two(2) day journey.  And then we have a "child left behind" after Mr. Spatottie...Nellie's spa helper was left behind.

Be All You Can Be Do All You Can Do!

I am so grateful to all of you who participate in our monthly survey's. Your answers help me to help YOU!
There were many similarities in the concerns when it comes to Disinfection. However, the greatest concern of all was making sure as Salon owners, as Technicians and the entire Salon team, proper Disinfection was practiced and practiced properly.
It isn't enough to do the basics "just to get by". Clients are looking for more and as Salon Owners, we should provide more. Just like the products we used on our feet 50 years ago don't work in today's environment, the Disinfection products of yesteryear...
are not enough.
I touched upon this in my last Blog. But, I was asked to provide more information as to how to set up a manual. Which, I have done.
Choose your Disinfection Product (s).  Is your implement cleaner the same as your surface cleaner?  Do you use an Ultrasonic cleaner to clean your tools? What do you use to clean your Pedicure tubs?  Are the jetted?
 

Page 1 of your manual should include an outline.  Once you have made your outline, you should tab your pages so information is easy to find.  An example of an outline would be:

1:  Our Disinfection product (s)

2:  Our procedure (s)

3:  MSDS sheets (Material Data Safety Sheets)

4:  What to do in case of an emergency (on each product)

5:  Our training (What do you do to train your team)

6:  Our pledge (Each one of your team members signature)

7:  Advertise

 

OUR DISINFECTION PRODUCTS

In this section you want to have an individual page for all the Disinfection products you use.  An example would be:

  1. BioSon - Ultrasonic Disinfection product for an Ultrasonic cleaner
  2. BioSurf - Surface and Implement cleaner
  3. BioVac - Jetted tub cleaner

Each page should be a full description of what each product is, and what it's purpose is.

 

 OUR PROCEDURES

In this section you want to list each product on a separate page and write a full description of how each product is used.  What is your procedure?  An example would be;

  1. BioSon cleaner;  Cleaner used for cleaning of our tools and implements. BioSon is placed in our UltraSonic cleaner to properly and fully cleanse our tools and implements prior to Disinfection.  After each service tools are processed in the UltraSonic cleaner for thorough cleansing.

 

 MSDS SHEETS  Material Data Safety Sheets

Whatever Manufacturers product you use, an MSDS sheet should be provided for each product.

The MSDS sheets will be valuable able for you in the event of a reaction or a medical emergency.  Should Medical personnel be contacted, they will ask you for the MSDS sheets.

 

 EMERGENCY

Emergency phone numbers should be provided in this section

  1. Owners name and phone # (in the event they are not on premise)
  2. Police
  3. Fire
  4. Hopsital

 

 TRAINING

In this section, I would list what your training procedures are.

  1. Do you train each new team member first day of hire?
  2. Do you require your team to study each product, what the contact time is and how each one should be properly used?

The amount of detail you can provide in this section will be crucial to providing comfort to your clients.  They will want to know that each of your team members are on the same page.

 

 PLEDGE

In this section, I would have each one of your team members sign a pledge that they have been properly trained and agree to follow proper disinfection protocol within the Salon environment for the protection of themselves and their clients.

 

 ADVERTISE

This section is more about placing signage throughout your Salon notifying your clients that you DO follow strict Disinfection procedures within your Salon.

This information should be on your stations, your windows AND all your Social Media pages including your website.

Shout it out with joy and be proud of your Professionalism

I can't say this enough.  Disinfection is no joke.  Look deeper into the products you are using.  Are you just getting by?  Are you more concerned about price than you are quality?  Our Salon environments are not getting any safer.  But....we CAN make them SAFE!

Is your staff following proper disinfection protocol?

"Is your staff following proper disinfection protocol" was the #1 concern we received from our survey regarding Disinfection. As it should be.
We so often find in many Salons where one or maybe two people are on the same page in knowing the proper Disinfection procedures, but the rest of the staff either doesn't care or just doesn't know.
It is important to know exactly what the Manufacturer's protocol is with the product you are using. Don't assume they are all the same....they aren't.
  • Some are diluted, some are not
  • Some require 10 minute contact time, some do not
  • Some need to be replaced daily, some do not
  • Some are high level grade of Disinfection, some are not
  • Some can cause damage to vinyl & ceramic, some do not
  • Some need to be disposed of carefully due to OSHA regulations, some do not
  • Some are carcinogenic, some are not
  • The list can go on and on
If you don't know how your Disinfection products work
How can your team?
I think it's important for us all to realize that proper protocol for Disinfection procedures within your Salon should be your #1 priority.  It doesn't matter whether you use Bleach, Barbicide, Caviside, Micrylium or any other brands.  What does matter is you know what the specific directions are in order to use it properly.
What also matters is that everyone on your team is educated on all the specifics when it comes to Disinfection.  In fact, I have a few suggestions on what I feel should be mandatory in every Salon facility.
  • Have your Disinfection MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets) easily accessible
  • Have a manual listing the dangers which can be present in our Salon environments
  • Have a list of steps which need to be followed with each service
  •      How to properly clean your work station
  •      How to properly clean your implements
  •      How to properly clean your pedicure bowls
  •      How to properly clean your surrounding areas
  • Check your State guidelines (this should actually be first)
  • Know the grade level of your Disinfection product (Low -medium - high)
  • Know what types of bacteria and fungi your Disinfection will kill
  • Know your contact times
  • Know how to care for someone if swallowed or made contact with skin or eyes
  • Display "how" you disinfect in your Salons
I also believe with any new hires, Disinfection should be a crucial part of their training.  I also believe monthly meetings should be held to do a double check that everyone in your Salon is following the same procedures. If you are independent within a Salon, don't be angry that you "appear" to be the only person following proper protocol.  Offer a suggestion to the owner as to how he/she can get her team on board to be the "best they can be" regarding disinfection. Gather pertinent information for the brand you are using.  Reach out to your supplier for marketing materials and specifics which give you more knowledge of the brand you are using. Be proud of what you do and share it daily.  Let your clients know by displaying signage in your salon and let them see the steps you take before and after (and sometimes during) their service. Proper disinfection is no joke.  It only takes one(1) time for something to go wrong.  I know for myself, when I learned first hand about proper disinfection, I knelt by my bed and prayed that night thanking the Lord that there were no injuries or infections caused by the "lack" of disinfection I had been doing in my Salon for 18 years.  I learned a valuable lesson and changed the way I did things not just in my Business, but in my home as well.

The time is now.....learn all you can.....do all you can.....and do it right!

How effective is your Disinfection?

When we posted our January survey "What is your #1 concern when it comes to Disinfection in your Salon", I was not at all surprised by the comments from those who participated.

The concerns are as follows:
  • Effectiveness
  • Safety
  • Salon knowledge
  • Proper usage
These are some very serious concerns....and should be!
In previous years (many many) when I had my Salon, the concern of disinfection was no where near the concerns we have now.  Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi always existed, however, we weren't privy to them, and quite truthfully even though they have always been around, there are more to worry about today and they are more dangerous.
I recently realized the most current problem today with Disinfection is much like the problems we have with products we use in our Foot Care room.
 The disinfection products of 50 years ago, no longer suffice for the concerns we presently deal with in our Salon.
This picture is a perfect example:  If you look at the two(2) bottom examples of products used quite frequently in our Salons and Spas, you can see a clear difference in the amount of time it took to get from point A to point B.  Our BioSurf disinfection products (#1) clearly has more efficacy, in less time.
But, how do you really know how effective your Disinfection products are if they don't provide you with this type of information?  Each Mfg. should have case studies, pictures, MSDS sheets for you to read and compare to other products exactly what their efficacy is.  I know with our BioSurf products, this type of information is plenty.  After all, if BioSurf is used in our Medical arena (for over 35 years) i'm feeling pretty confident the testing is accurate and we can get a ton of it.
Time is of value isn't it?  We don't just deal with how efficient our products are, we also deal with how long do you have to wait for them to kill the viruses, fungi and bacteria we are exposed to on a daily basis?  3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes and sometimes even longer.  Isn't it better to have a product which is effective AND quick?
You also want to know if your disinfection product is a low, medium or high grade disinfection.  Low grade may be acceptable by your State board, but really?  Are you comfortable using a low grade disinfection product in your facility?  Sadly, I know many Salons do.  I struggle with these conversations because they are basing their choice on price instead of effectiveness.
Another point to realize is if you mix your disinfection solution with water, this can also reduce it's effectiveness.
To summarize, determine what you want in "effectiveness".  
Do you want to get by just on the basics, or do you
want to be better than needed?  
Ask the provider of your disinfection product to provide you with full disclosure on the brand.  Ask for lab testing and case studies.  And, don't forget to make sure you have your MSDS sheets readily available at your Salon in case you need them.
Centre for Beauty chose to carry Micrylium products due to it's efficacy and due to the fact is is safe for the environment AND our technicians.  This is important.  How do you dispose of your Disinfection products?  Can they be flushed down the toilet, rinsed down the sink or.....are you really suppose to call a waste removal Company to dispose of it?

7 Ways to Perform a Waterless Pedicure

My final blog pertaining to our survey asking "your #1 question about Pedicures" pertains to Waterless Pedicures.
I am asked this question on a regular basis which to me is very enlightening because it is an indication that us as Foot Care Providers are taking seriously the big influx of geriatric, diabetic and immunocompromised clients.
I was performing Waterless Pedicures back in the 90's as add on services in my Skin Care and Massage rooms. It wasn't from a safety factor, it was strictly about adding service $$$$ to my Salon/Spa.
However, in the 20th Century, it's a different story. Waterless Pedicures are sometimes a must for safety reasons. And, with Mobile Salons on the rise it's the perfect scenario for the convenience of our Technicians who don't have a running
supply of water.
Waterless doesn't mean less luxury, less ambience AND it doesn't even mean more clinical. We can still taylor the Foot Care service to the design of our liking. As with anything we do in our craft, it's all about the imagination.
Let's begin with the cleansing or "soaking" process.  The two brands I offer at Centre for Beauty is LCN Urea Foot Care and Footlogix.  I really don't like to show favorites but, I do have to admit, for this process I personally like the Urea Foot Bath.  Although both brands include Urea as their base, the Urea Foot Care has additional ingredients which add a more silky, luxurious, cleansing feel.  However, the reality is you can use this method with most any brand.
The idea of doing a "foot soak" is to cleanse the foot and begin the softening process of the cuticle and the skin.  Therefore, I wouldn't recommend you skip this step.
 Here are 7 different methods;
  1. Put your foot bath or soak in a spray bottle and fill with water. Spray the foot. Or,
  2. Simply massage your soak directly onto the skin and massage or "cleanse"
  3. Wrap the foot with a heated towel, apply light squeezing pressure (alternate) and when cool,wipe off.  Or;
  4. Use a facial steamer directed at the feet allowing the pores to open and sooth, cleanse and soften the skin.
  5. You can also just spray or massage the foot and let sit while performing cuticle work.
  6. Another method is to make a solution of foot bath or soak in a large bowl.  Place clean towels and let the solution wet the towels.  Place the wet towels in a towel warmer and use those as a cleansing cloth.
  7. Finally, if you wanted to skip the bath or soak all together, use a foot deodorizer or a disinfectant which is safe for the skin.  Spray on the foot and proceed.
Manicuring of the toenails is the same as you would do in any procedure using your favorite cuticle cream and stainless steel implements such as a spoon or cuticle tool.   Don't think just because you are performing a waterless service, you have to skip the scrub.  Our LCN exfoliating scrub and our Footlogix seaweed scrub both, can be used without having to rinse with water.   7 application suggestions  
  1. Using the aforementioned scrubs (because I can't speak for all brands), massage the scrub onto the dry calloused areas until the scrub has processed into the skin and it becomes dry.  Simply wipe away the excess with a dry towel.
  2. Using the same process but use a wet-warmed towel to remove the excess.
  3. If you have a catch bowl and a water supply, you could use a pitcher with warm water and pour over the feet to rinse.
  4. You could use a facial steamer to moisten the foot and remove with a dry towel.
  5. Mix your bath or soak with the exfoliating scrub and use together at the same time.  Massage onto the foot for cleansing and exfoliating at the same time.  Wipe with a dry towel, or a warm heated towel.  Or;
  6. Use your scrub first (after you sanitize the feet) and THEN use your spray bottle solution to rinse and wipe.
  7. Mix your scrub with your foot massage cream at the end of the service.
Keep in mind, Manufacturers have a suggested protocol because they developed it.  They also have a suggested protocol because they are frequently asked.  People inherently need direction.   However, that does not mean you can't "re-invent" the protocol for your own convenience.   Our next process would be callous debriment.  Again, there is choice if you want to offer a callous debriment with your Waterless Pedicure.   Sometime, because of the person's health, you may choose not to offer this process.  Other times you may be offering an onsite Pedicure for a wedding party or business event and callous debriment just isn't conducive.   If you are offering a Waterless Pedicure in your Salon/Spa as a regular on the menu and never using a Pedicure bowl, callous debriment should always be a part of the service.  Unless of course you have a client who for Medical reasons shouldn't be filed.   I caution you however, please know the dangers we present when using the wrong files.  I again direct you to a previous Blog.   7 Callous Debriment ideas  
  1. Spray the dry or calloused area with a "safe" callous spray.  Using your Professional foot file, begin your filing.  Note:  If using a product which contains harmful to the skin ingredients....be sure to NOT spray on the area of the foot that isn't unhealthy.  If you do, you will affect the integrity of the good skin.
  2. Using the same process above, wrap the foot with a plastic foot bag.
  3. Using the same process in 1 and 2, wrap a wet heated towel over the foot.
  4. Using the same process as 1, lightly wrap the foot with a dry towel to set.
  5. Using the same process as 1, in lieu of using a foot file, use your hands and perform a massage.  If you are using a good callous product like the LCN Soak Spray and/or Footlogix callous softener, you will find this method to be useful.
  6. Callous debriment with the right products can be used by itself without having to soak or exfoliate.  This would be considered a "dry" Pedicure instead of a "waterless" pedicure.
  7. With all of the above, once you have completed the callous debriment process, simply wipe away the debris.
If you haven't noticed by now, there are so many options and variations.  There is no right or wrong.  There is no my way or the highway.  It's all YOUR way.   Do what you are comfortable with.  Offer the ambience as you see fit.  Work within the confinement of your own space.  Make it WORK for YOU!   From this point on, your Waterless Pedicure isn't a whole lot different then any other type of pedicure.   Finish as always with your Massage and your toenail refinement using nail polish, gel polish, nail art or glitter.   In closing, how about 7  names other then "Waterless Pedicure"?  
  1. Safe Process Pedicure
  2. Water Free Foot Care
  3. Dry before your eyes Pedicure
  4. Pedi Dry
  5. Less is Best Foot Care
  6. Geriatric Foot Care

Pedicuring Cancer Patients

One of the most appreciated questions I received in my December survey was in regards to Pedicuring Cancer patients. This is such a great question because it involves a wide scope of areas within our Foot Care arena that we should be addressing and/or following daily.  It also brings us back around to my favorite phrase "education is the key to success" Let's begin with the #1 most important practice that we should do in our Foot Care room.  Proper cleaning and disinfection.  It is important on a normal day but, if you plan to promote or offer a Foot Care service to anyone who  has cancer......you best be on the top of your game when it comes to cleaning and disinfection.

My recommendations in the Foot Care room would be as follows:
  • Prior to the appointment, thoroughly cleanse and disinfect your Foot Care area.  A high grade level of disinfection solution should be used.
  • Recommend to your client to either purchase from you, or bring in his/her own set of tools and files
  • I suggest a dry pedicure.  You can offer a beautiful dry Pedicure if using the right products.  The only difference is the cleansing of the feet procedure would be done with a spray bottle in lieu of putting their feet into a foot bath.
  • Do not cut cuticles.  There a products which will eliminate excess cuticle without having to cut.
  • Callous debriment should be done very carefully and most important do NOT use sandpaper, pumice, or a cheese grater type file.  For more information on which files are safe click here
  • Be gentle with our Massage.  Many cancer patience will have a tendency to bruise easily.
Many things happen to the Nails Where education is important as well, is learning how to identify what is happening to the nails and what to do or not to do with them.  In many cases regarding cancer patients, it's the nails which can become more affected.  Like losing hair during treatments, nails can often be effected.
  • The nails may look bruised, turning colors of black, brown blue or even green.  It's common that people of darker color will show more of a change when it comes to color of the nails.
  • Blemishes on the nails are common.  Horizontal or vertical lines and/or small indentations.  The good news about this type of reaction, the nail will go through stages which mark the different cycles of chemotherapy.  They are not permanent, they will grow out as the nail grows out.
  • Nails may become thin or brittle.  The hard part about this is the nails won't grow as long or maybe be as hard as they use to be.  Again, the nails will grow out and if using proper cuticle care, they can grow out healthy.
  • Nails can also become dry which in turn can cause frayed cuticles.  Try not to cut them.  Use a cuticle cream to condition and add hydration to the cuticles.  One treatment in the Foot Care room won't make a difference.  It is important to educate your client on a daily maintenance routine.
  • Ingrown nails can also be a problem.  Especially if the nail becomes dry and the cuticles become frayed.  Again, a cuticle treatment is the answer.
  • The worse case is the nail can lift completely off the nail bed and in some cases actually fall off.  Unfortunately when this happens, it is a breeding ground for bacteria.  My suggestion would be if at all possible, inform your client as soon as possible the importance of daily nail care maintenance from the beginning.

What we need to educate our clients about
  • Keep nails cut properly and clean to reduce the risk of infection
  • Do not wear artificial nail products.
  • Wear gloves when gardening, cleaning and washing dishes to avoid getting any cuts or abrasions
  • They can wear nail polish to hid any imperfections
  • Use a non-acetone polish remover.  It will be less drying on the nail and surrounding skin.
  • Don't bite or pick at their nails or skin.
  • Use a cuticle product to keep their nails hydrated and the surrounding skin moist
  • Be careful with exposure to too much water.  Over exposure can lead to fungal infections in the nail bed.
  • ANY signs of redness or inflammation, consult a Doctor immediately.

Additional changes When we think of the many changes that can happen as someone goes through chemotherapy, hair loss and nausea are probably what comes to mind first.  And, we don't often realize that there are many other conditions which, can cause changes of our nails.  This is just one of the reasons "again" we are often, as Pedicurist, the first responders.  We need to be informed, educated and ready to know how to manage and how to refer to a Medical Professional if necessary. What Wikipedia can’t tell you about using the right products

Going down my list of questions from our December survey "again", the questions of knowing what products to use in our Foot Care room came up more then once, in many different faces;
  • Getting the right products
  • Effective products
  • Removing rough, extensive dry skin build up
  • How to make feet soft again
  • Getting dry heels to look great
  • Easiest way to manage dry peeling skin
  • What are the best products to use
  • What is the best product to reduce calluses
  • How to get super smooth feet
  • Etc. etc.
What connected with me about these questions is the obvious need for us as Technicians to first realize this is not something you and only you can fix. This is a team effort between you as the Professional and your client. In addition, these concerns are not able to be completely fixed in just one Foot Care service. There is a process.
Last week I went to the Salon to get my nails done. I do this religiously every two weeks.
My Technician, whom I trust explicitly kindly said to me....."I need you to
make a conscious effort to apply cuticle oil daily, "please"
I was first embarrassed.  I knew how badly my cuticles have gotten.  It's winter time.  They always get dry in the Winter.  Why?  Because I do nothing all year long to take care of them, during the cold Winter months they tend to look a whole lot worse.
But then, I thought how brilliant of her.  Just the way she made the comment was so real, so genuine with a hint of "do this for me".  The one thing she didn't do though, is follow through with making a sale.  And, BTW......I have no cuticle oil at my house.
I opened with this story because we have to realize, we are not magicians.  The simple answer to all the above questions certainly does have to do with products we use in our Foot Care room.  But, it also has to do with the follow up of home care.
I personally would love to know the products behind these questions.  Our industry is so fixated with scents and oils and all that glitters and gold.  We honestly don't think much about what the products we are using are doing for "us".  If they smell good, if they "look" like they are providing a pretty Foot Care service and in many cases if it's a well known brand.....it will be used.  Well, i'm here to tell you.......if that's what you are using, you will never be able to resolve the problems associated with the above questions.  Why??????????
The majority of these products which we all know i'm talking about, sit on top of our skin.  When applied, they smell good, they look pretty and they feel pretty.  That's all they do.  They make us all smell, look and feel pretty.  But, they don't take care of the dry skin on our feet, they may make our feet feel soft but for a very short period of time, they can not reduce callouses "naturally" and they certainly can not aid in the care of rough, calloused skin build up.
The products used mostly in our Foot Care arena will wipe off on a towel, in the shower, on the floor, in your shoes....the very first thing your feet touch.
So....what do we do?
  • First, we need to understand that healing comes from the inside out.
  • Second, we need to understand we need to be using products which have hygroscopic properties.  Meaning, products which will process into the layers of the epidermis to allow the skin to heal "from the inside out".
  • Third, we need to understand this healing process does not happen over night, nor can it happen just once every 4 weeks and be expected to be "repaired".
Healing is a process.  Consider this;  You have an infection in your eye.  The Dr. tells you take take a Tylenol.  The Tylenol will help you feel better, but it won't rid the infection. The same is true for products used in our Salons.  They make us feel better, make your client feel better, but they aren't really solving a problem.

In closing, not all products are created equal AND we don't make money by being a "me too" Salon using "me too" brands.  Our feet have changed over the past 50 years, our industry has changed drastically over the past 15 years and our responsibilities as "first responders" are greater.
