Handling Stress In Our Beauty World

Why Beauty Professionals Need to Protect Their Peace — and Why Unplugging Matters

I just returned from 8 days of “unplugging”.  I never knew, this decision would be one of the best I made for myself in years.

In the beauty industry, stress can become so normal that we stop recognizing how much it is affecting us. We answer texts after hours, scroll through social media to keep up, manage client needs, handle business responsibilities, and still try to show up with a smile for everyone who sits in our chair, or comes into our space.

For nail technicians, salon owners, and beauty professionals, the pressure can feel nonstop. The truth is, if we do not learn how to handle stress in a healthy way, it will eventually show up in our body, our attitude, our energy, and our work.

Stress does not always come in loud ways. Sometimes it looks like mental exhaustion, short patience, poor sleep, forgetfulness, creative burnout, or simply feeling like you are always “on.” In our industry, we are caregivers by nature. We listen, serve, educate, solve problems, and often carry more emotional weight than people realize. We pour into others all day long. However, if we never refill ourselves, that constant output can leave us drained and disconnected from the very career we once loved.

One of the most overlooked ways to reduce stress is to unplug from electronics. That may sound simple, but in today’s world it is not always easy….speaking from personal experience.  Phones, tablets, laptops, and social media keep us tied to work, comparison, and constant stimulation. Even when we are technically “off,” many of us are still answering messages, checking orders, scrolling through other people’s success, or thinking about what we should be posting next. Our minds never truly get to rest. Unplugging creates space to breathe. It gives your nervous system a break. It allows your mind to slow down, your body to settle, and your thoughts to become clearer.

There are real benefits to stepping away from electronics, even for a short time each day. Unplugging can improve sleep, reduce anxiety, help with focus, and support emotional balance. It can also make you more present with your family, your clients, and yourself. When you are not constantly reacting to notifications and outside noise, you can think better, create better, and respond better. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business and yourself, is to step away from it for a moment so you can come back stronger.

Handling stress also means being honest about what you need. Maybe you need stronger work boundaries. Maybe you need to stop answering messages late at night. Maybe you need one full day a week where business does not get center stage. Maybe you need quiet time in the morning before the world starts pulling on you. Maybe you need a walk, prayer, fresh air, rest, or simply permission to not be available every minute of the day. Managing stress is not weakness. It is wisdom. It is part of longevity in this industry.

Salon professionals are some of the hardest working people I know. We are creative, caring, driven, and committed. But none of those strengths should come at the expense of our health. You cannot continue to serve at a high level if you are constantly running on empty. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is necessary. The better you care for your own well-being, the better you can show up for your clients, your team, and your business.

The question then becomes, how do you handle stress? Start small. Turn off notifications for an hour. Put your phone in another room during dinner. Take a real lunch break without scrolling. Step outside between clients. Create a stopping point at the end of your workday. Unplugging does not mean you do not care. It means you care enough to protect your peace.  For me, my gift to myself after the New Year was no electronics on Sunday.

It would be easy for me to spend every waking moment on Sunday’s writing my blog, creating marketing, checking through emails.  It was non-stop.  I had to figure out a way to manage at least one day a week because I knew the intensity of what I give to my Business was affecting me and everything around me.  I didn’t feel good, I was always tired, I was cranky (bitchy) and I had even pondered the moments of just walking away from it all.

We are an industry built on service, connection, and appearance, let us not forget the importance of wellness behind the scenes. Your mind matters. Your health matters. Your peace matters. YOU matter.  And sometimes the most productive thing you can do is power down, unplug, and give yourself the same care you so freely give to everyone else.

So, how did my 8 days go “off the grid”.  Amazing!  My daughter told me I should retire because I’m a lot more fun when I’m not stressed from work.  I was more patient with not only my husband, all people around me.

I also realized – the world actually survived without me.  Go figure!

Now, it is important to make sure you have your ducks in a row.  My new venture with AI gave me the opportunity to create processes and put them down on paper for my assistant.  I knew my Business would be fine however, there are so many variables that only I deal with on a daily basis.  So, I created scenarios and what to do IF.  It was a 3-month process that worked like a charm.

I was very specific in what I cared about the most.  YOU, my clients.  And basically, my teams instructions were to do everything to make sure our clients were well taken care of.  Everything else I knew, if they followed the golden rule…would fall into place.  And…it did.

I encourage you….no, I beg you.  Do this for yourself.  Do this for your Family.  Do this for your Business.  I promise you, you will not have regrets.
