How to Manage Burnout in the Beauty Industry
Burnout is real—and in the beauty industry, it can hit us all very hard. Between back to back appointment, client demands, physical strain on our bodies, and the emotional aspect of keeping everyone happy, it’s easy to reach a breaking point. (speaking from personal experience)
You may feel like you’re running on empty, dreading the work you once loved.
Fortunately, burnout is manageable—and even preventable—with the right tools and boundaries in place.
Burnout doesn’t always hit us in dramatic fashion. Sometimes, it creeps in quietly. It’s important to take note of the following;
-
Continual exhaustion, even after rest
-
Irritability or emotional numbness
-
Dreading going to work
-
Feeling disconnected from clients and even friends and family
-
Uninspired creatively
-
Physical aches which appear, probably from pushing your body too hard
If this sounds like you, it’s time to slow down and reset.
Is impossible to pour from an empty cup. If you don’t have anything to give…this creates all new problems.
Start by creating boundaries that protect your energy:
-
Limit your work hours—Clients WILL beg for a 7 p.m. slot. You don’t owe it to them…learn to say no!
-
Schedule breaks during your day to rest, eat, and breathe. It is so important to reset many times during the day.
-
Say no to clients who drain you or disrespect your time. We often create how our clients act. It’s important to “train” them from the very beginning. Burnout often stems from trying to be everything to everyone. Give yourself permission to put your needs first. Yet, don’t ever forget who go you to where you are today. Sometimes you just have to have that conversation…with Professionalism and respect.
Remember why you entered the beauty industry in the first place. Was it the joy of helping others feel confident? Making them feel good and pretty? Solving problems? The love of creativity?
Take time to reconnect with that passion. Sometimes, even a single service done with intention can rekindle your spark.
Surround yourself with people who understand the industry grind. Whether it’s a trusted mentor, fellow technician, or beauty professional group. Find a space where you can vent, share ideas, and feel understood. Talking about burnout doesn’t make you weak—it makes you wise.
I caution you however, misery loves Company. Be sure those you surround yourself with are great listeners, yet aren’t dwelling in your misery.
Our work is physically demanding. Repetitive motions, long hours hunched over can wreak havoc on our bodies. It’s important to get into routines of;
-
Regular stretching or massage therapy
-
Ergonomic tools and chairs
-
Comfortable shoes and flooring support
-
Hydration and nourishing meals
Your body is your #1 tool—treat it like gold.
Burnout sometimes happens when we feel stagnant. Learning a new skill or technique, or attending an inspiring class or trade show, can reignite your excitement. Growth fuels purpose.
Take time off. Unplug. Guilt-free. Whether it’s a long weekend, a full vacation, or even just a tech-free day at home—your mind and body need time away from the grind to recharge and get back to being you!
Remember also, if burnout has taken a toll on your mental health, there’s no shame in seeking help. Therapists, coaches, or counselors can help you develop tools to manage stress, anxiety, or overwhelm. Sometimes we just need an outside source to just listen to us.
Burnout doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’ve been giving too much without getting enough back.
Your passion, your business, and your clients all benefit when you’re well.
It’s not selfish to prioritize your well-being—it’s essential.
So breathe. Rest. Reconnect. You really do deserve the same care and attention you so generously give to others.
If you ever need anyone to talk to, to vent or maybe just whine…..I’m here for you!
This article is for me. I’ve just made a significant decision to reduce my hours and increase my prices. I have fibromyalgia, which includes chronic fatigue. I have always pushed myself beyond my physical and mental capabilities. I’ve done this many times in the past and have ended up saying yes instead of no. I’m determined not to give in to clients who beg me to stay late for them or squeeze them in. I will be 60 in less than 2 months and have been in the beauty industry for 41 years.
I am very familiar with fibromyalgia through former clients of mine, friends and Family. Stress can make it worse which is why it is even more important for you to try to reset. I have loved all (well most of :)) my clients through this career. However, I know the more we give, the more they take. Not only is it just human nature, I feel it is because we as Technicians will never get the respect we deserve. You have a couple of years over me in this Industry and I have a couple of years over you in age……the stresses of this Industry can definetly pay it’s toll. Just remember, you are no good to them, if you are not good to you. Thank you for commenting….I pray for your strength to be able to do what’s best for you.
Love this! Sharing with my daughter as this is a real thing for us right now. Thank you once again for your insight
🙂 Thank you for sharing and thank you for your kind comment. It’s always been amazing to me where we might see or hear just that one(1) thing that clicks in our minds. I hope your daughter truly benefits from my words.
This was so good! Definitely been fighting burn out! Some fantastic advice to reset! Thank you for all you do and share with us CJ! I so appreciate you!
Tise, I see yu have been going through some drastic, yet positive changes. Regardless, good or bad…burnout can come either way. Take care of yourself and thank you for your kind words. Hugs!
Right on time! So it’s ’burn out’ not going cray cray 🤪
😮💨 Thank you, I’m on it and will adjust accordingly!
OMG I can so relate to that “not going cray” comment. It’s easy to think what we are experiencing is anything but burnout. I am so glad this article helped. I also believe the stresses of covid and our political arena (regardless of what we believe) has just added to what we can experience through burnout. Take care of yourself. You are no good to anyone unless you can be good to yourself.
Amen and aaaaaaamen! I went live with a therapist about “burnout” in the beauty industry during mental health awareness month in May. It is very real for beauty professionals because clients “trauma dump” onto us because we are in such close proximity and touch them during services.
As an empath, I protect myself with grounding exercises, not working for 3-5 days once a month, offer to pray with clients (dont care if they dont believe or not- they stop talking when I offer prayer), or I will offer them business cards of therapists, psychologist, or health care professionals so they can get help. Real help- not me saying “that’s crazy” 😂
You truly are amazing…..keep up what you are doing. It’s a big elephant. We can only conquer it in little pieces at a time. Wish I had seen your live…I bet it was great!
