Leave it to the Professionals!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I’m sure you have heard the expression “jack of all trades, master of none”.

I never really understood that statement until I became engulfed in Foot Care and found myself mentoring and educating others in our Industry.

Actually, it was one of my team members at a trade show a few years back said “CJ, these Technicians really look up to you”.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]I never really thought of myself as “someone to look up to”. I just did what I did and do what I do because I love it and I really enjoy helping others grow and watch their dreams come true.

There is pressure which comes with this however, and I wonder if others realize the importance of sharing information and/or offering education which can impact so many people.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1534802218178{margin-top: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”24″ img_size=”500×500″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

I recently hired an assistant and she unknowingly reminded me how someone not in this Industry thinks.

She makes me realize the importance of sharing accurate information and the dangers of sharing in-accurate information.

She makes me realize the tremendous amount of work we ALL have to do in an effort to change the image of this industry.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1534802218178{margin-top: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]When I interviewed her I told her the only thing constant in this industry is the enormous amount of variations we can encounter on a daily basis.

This is true when it comes to administrative work, yet it is also true when it comes to services, applications, design, products, prices…….the list goes on and on.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”24″ img_size=”500×500″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1534802238716{margin-top: 50px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”WHAT DO WE DO?” color=”mulled_wine” border_width=”10″][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

What we do is stay within our boundaries. Stay within the area of our Education. Stay with what we are comfortable with. STOP trying to branch out into areas which we have no Business being in.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]In owning a Business since 1985, I’ve learned over the years there is so much which needs to be done to sustain a Business. It really doesn’t matter what Business it is.

I’ve learned it’s okay to branch out into new things. It’s okay to grow. However, if you have a specialty, if you have “something” which put you on the map…..don’t let it go.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]A couple of examples would be;

  1. I know that SEO is important to a Business. Search engine Optimization. It’s imperative for the growth of a Business IF you want people to find you. Can I do a google search to learn this? Can I buy (or download) a book? Absolutely I can. Why would I? This is not my area of expertise. Sure….I can probably do it yet, my time is valuable. And I do put a price on it. Since it would take me so much time to research, I would probably spend more money learning and have less $$$ to actually implement my SEO strategy.

Can I share with you that SEO is important? Absolutely….Can I teach you about SEO? NO!!!!![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

  • Another example would be accounting. As I said, I’ve had my own Business since 1985. I have always had an accounting system and over the years I have improved on the art of record keeping. I know now to ask questions (from a Professional) instead of fixing accounting errors months later when you can’t even remember what happened yesterday. However, do I do my own taxes? HECK NO! I leave that up to the people who do this for a living. Again, I can learn from various different aspects. Is it worth my time?

Can I share with you that proper accounting is important? Absolutely…Can I teach you a class on accounting? Only enough to get you by, so that answer would be NO!!!!![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

  • Another example is what really sparked me to write this article. I am hearing and seeing so many Technicians “teaching” foot care. I personally love when our Technicians expand into something other than sitting behind a chair. However, the problem arises when I see so much mis-information.
  • Teaching by definition is; Engagement with learners to enable their understanding and application of knowledge, concepts and processes. “Enable their understanding” If the teacher is teaching inaccurate information or techniques which exceed the limits of our license…this is just wrong.

I read so many trade magazines and even magazines not industry related. Everyone is an authority, or at least they think they are. Proceed with caution.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]My point of this article is don’t be a jack of all trades, and a master of none.

Find what your specialty is and stick with it. If you are in the industry and you do pedicures really well, master the trade for your clients and continue to work to keep them happy. Continue to grow in your service and continue to be creative in what (I hope) you like to do.

If teaching is your passion, that’s great. Teach your clients what you know which will benefit them.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]My inspiration for this article is a result of a couple of conversations I’ve had recently with fellow Industry piers and friends.

I’ve always said, “resources are our greatest assets”.

It’s not important to me, to be good at everything. It’s important to me to be great at what I know. Which is why I always encourage my clients to not just believe me…..do their own research.

With that being said, google isn’t the end all. DON’T believe everything you read on google. After all, if you search hard enough you can find any answer you are looking for. Know your resources and go straight to the source.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]Growing is a good thing. Going into area’s you are not really familiar with is not.

Are you a true Professional or are you trying to be everything to everyone?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9172″ title=”CJ Murray, President”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  1. Hi CJ!
This article is on point. Definitely don’t be a jack of all trades. Be a master of your niche. It takes 5-7 years of knowledge to be a master of a subject and I honestly believe that. Some people definitely need to stay in their lane.

    1. Going out of their lane is a big problem occurring currently in our Industry. I’m happy to see you recognize that. 🙂
